Chronic pain is highly prevalent among citizens In the U.S. Around 30% of individuals will suffer from chronic pain at some point in their lives. Chronic pain is defined as pain, with or without a specific cause, persisting longer than six months.

A common and unfortunate side effect of chronic pain is often depression. Chronic pain can lead a person to become de-conditioned, filled with thoughts of despair and hopelessness.

Ketamine is a medication with both sedative and pain-relieving actions. It was FDA approved in the 1960’s and has since been studied as a treatment option for chronic pain. Although many are familiar with ketamine as a “party drug,” but in reality, it is not a physically addictive substance. In the medically supervised low doses used in the clinic setting, it can be an effective way to treat and manage chronic pain. It is also a great alternative to opiate-based pain medications. Often patients treated with ketamine over several infusions report a decrease in pain symptoms for up to six months.

Although ketamine infusions can be effective, their efficacy can be enhanced through holistic techniques supporting chronic pain management. Using these six holistic pain management techniques can enhance the positive results of ketamine infusions, or can be used independently to decrease pain without any medicinal intervention.

1. Sleep. Having good quality sleep improves overall health and alleviates chronic pain. Make sure you have a good bedtime routine, away from electronics and distractions.

2. Challenge your thoughts. With chronic pain, it is easy to have catastrophic thoughts.  Ask yourself when you come across these thoughts: “Are they true or do I just feel that way?”

3. Relax. Meditation, yoga, and active breathing are ways to help promote relaxation. Stress will only enhance any pain you are already experiencing.

4. Have fun. Many people who suffer from chronic pain feel isolated since they are staying at home. Find a hobby that will get you out of the house and increase your quality of life.

5. Exercise. A simple walk is a great way to get out and get moving.  A walk can put less pressure on your joints and keep your body from losing muscle.

6. Set SMART goals. SMART stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. For example, instead of “I will eat healthily,” a SMART goal would be, “I will cook at home twice a week.”

Ketamine infusions are a great solution for many of the 50 million adults who suffer from chronic pain. However, having holistic therapies in your back pocket can help support ketamine infusion therapy, or any other pain management therapy you may be using.
